'Neighborhood Legend'
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Warren Grant Travers of Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation, Manitoba. Warren was born in Peguis First Nation, the second-oldest son of John George and Janet Travers, and the fifth child of nine siblings.
Warren will be lovingly remembered by his mother Janet, his daughters Mary (Michael) and Vestille; his grandchildren Isla and Ty; his sisters Arlene Travers, Adeline Travers, Claudia Kubel (Roland), Jennifer Travers; brothers Faron (Rhonda) and Larry (Tracey), sisters-in-law Marilyn Ross (“Poody”) and Leona Ross (“Beetle”), brothers-in-law Henry Ross (Maya) and Victor Ross (Loretta), his Aunts Shirley Hudson and Eva Murdock (Lawrence); many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all special and close to his heart.
Warren was predeceased by his beloved wife Roberta Travers (nee Ross); father John George Travers Jr., brothers John Paul Travers and Donovan Travers; grandparents Mary Morrisseau and William Everett; grandmother Lillian Travers and grandfather John George Travers, Sr. (“Jigagjee”); father-in-law Barney Ross, mother-in-law Rita Ross (nee Goosehead); grandparents Edward and Winnifred Ross; uncle Stanley Hudson (Abby); sister-in-law Kimberly Ross; son-in-law Tyler Young, and brother-in-law Wolfgang Makurath.
From childhood onward, Warren was known as an inventor and mechanically gifted and was often found making magic outside with his projects and repairs for all who came by for help. One day, he decided he would learn to fly, and made hang-gliding wings out of wood, attached with straps. Warren forgot to add steering to his wings and headed straight toward the hydro pole and crashed, bringing him back to earth and ending his career in aviation.
Until Roberta entered his life, Warren's first love was fishing and the outdoors. His lifetime on Lake Winnipeg as a commercial fisherman brought him immense joy and peace. Because of his skill as a fisherman, his family never went without and he kept food on his and other families tables with his skill and generous gifts of fish for anybody who asked. He was the hardest worker most had ever seen, a skilled hunter, a logger, carpenter, welder, heavy-machinery operator, and band councillor – he truly was a jack of all trades! He was adventurous, and loved leading groups of fishermen across the lake to participate in fishing derbies in Berens River, Poplar River and Bloodvein, among others.
Warren was never found on the lake without his loyal four-legged companion, Toby Keith. He was often accompanied on his adventures by his good friend Brian Cameron, and lifelong friend Hubert Felix Jr. (“Amoo”). Dad was very close with his father-in-law Barney Ross, whom he affectionately nicknamed “The Coug.” Warren wore many hats and had a creative spirit which he expressed through his woodworking projects, his guitar playing, and singing. His family was proud of him when he placed second in the NCI Jam Talent Show, where he won over the crowd with his tribute to Conway Twitty; in our eyes, he was Number One.
Warren met the love of his life, Roberta Rose Ross, when he was 19, and they lived together from that moment on, later welcoming joyfully their daughters Mary and Vestille, until Roberta's passing in 2025. He tried his best to keep himself busy, but he missed his wife deeply; his family finds solace knowing that Warren is now together with his wife Roberta, whom he loved so dearly.
Warren was “Facebook Famous,” and brightened the days of his many fans and followers through his sometimes informative and always hilarious Facebook posts. Condolences have been gratefully received by his children, who appreciate the kind words of strangers and friends alike.
Warren was always eager to help out community members and anybody needing a hand, doing yardwork for many households, feeding anybody who needed or wanted fish, and ploughing roads and driveways.
In 2014, Warren gave his heart to the Lord. Every morning, he woke up, poured himself a cup of coffee and read his bible. In the evenings, he and his mother Janet would read the bible together, discussing scripture and sharing the word of God. He was outspoken in his beliefs and bold in his praise of the Lord. His favourite scripture gives us strength.
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd: I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
for His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
