It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved daughter, Markey Janice Lynn Young, who passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026 in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 35.
Markey was born to Flora Daniels and was the eldest of seven children. She was a beautiful soul who was loved by many and will be remembered for her kind heart, loving spirit, generosity, sense of humour, and the care she so freely gave to others.
Markey was an outgoing person who loved travelling to different communities and getting to know people. She enjoyed camping, visiting friends and family, and making new friends wherever she went. She had a way of making people feel welcome and never wanted anyone around her to be sad. Markey always had something funny to say or do, to bring a smile to your face. Her laughter and personality brought joy to many people.
Markey began attending cultural gatherings and Sundance ceremonies, where she developed a deeper connection with her culture and spiritual way of life. Through ceremony, she received her spirit name, "Misteh Napew Iskwew." She became a proud Sundancer and devoted herself to ceremony, carrying her love for her culture and spiritual journey with her. Markey also learned how to harvest traditional medicines and embraced the teachings and knowledge that were shared with her. Her connection to ceremony, culture, and the land became an important part of who she was.
Markey was always willing to give of herself and support those around her. She worked hard and devoted much of her time to caring for children-not only through her work as a support worker, but also in her personal life. She helped raise and care for the children of her cousins, friends, and sisters. Her nurturing heart, generosity, and willingness to be there for others touched many lives.
Three years ago, Markey met and fell in love with Liberty Sanderson. Together, they were blessed with their miracle baby boy, Cohen, who was one of the greatest joys and blessings of her life. Markey loved being a mother and loved Cohen deeply. Motherhood meant everything to her, and her love for her son will forever remain a part of her legacy.
Due to medical issues, Markey relocated to Winnipeg last year, where she continued to make an impact on the lives of those around her.
Markey leaves to mourn her passing her beloved partner, Liberty, and their son, Cohen; her mother, Flora (Conrad); and her siblings, Katherine, Adam, Wellington, Bret Heart, Rona, and Wesley “Twins."
She also leaves to mourn her aunties and uncles: Deborah (Claude) Patchinose, whom she lovingly called Dad; Mary, Connie (Delbert), Pauline Captain, Jean George and Uncle Stanley (Mary Jane) Daniels.
Markey will also be deeply missed by her cousins: Dennis (Randi) Daniels, Marilyn Daniels, Deidra (Ben) Daniels, Rachel Cook, Marissa Cook, Grant Daniels, Edward Jr. Genaille, Brendan Daniels, Allison Daniels, Elizabeth (Martin) Captain, Andrea Daniels, Chris Lachose, Aiden Lachose, Janet Daniels, Tracey (Gary) Chartier, Jessica (Joe) Patchinose, Charlie Patchinose, Edwin (Fox) Patchinose, Jennifer Captain, Yvonne Kematch, Bernard Daniels, Augustine Daniels, Kathleen Daniels, and Gideon Daniels; godson, Kendrick George; along with many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.
Markey was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Rose and Gideon Daniels; great-grandparents, Rachel and Adam George, Catherine and Lazarus Daniels; paternal grandparents, Margaret and John Young; her babies in infancy, Evan Xavier and Baby Monias; auntie Elsie Daniels; uncle, Rodney Captain.
Markey leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, generosity, culture, ceremony, and service. She gave so much of herself to her family, friends, the children she cared for, and the people she met throughout her life.
Her time with us was far too short, but the love she gave and the memories she created will forever live on. Her spirit will continue through her son Cohen, her family, the people she loved, the teachings she carried, and all those whose lives she touched.
Markey will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in our hearts.
